Interscholastic Equestrian Association (IEA) Riding Teams
IEA offers a recognized team sport for high school and middle school students, grades 4-12, competing in up to five regular season competitions spanning the late summer, fall, and winter; riders do not need to own a horse to participate and compete and caters to all levels of riding. IEA is an equitation-based series (judged on the rider, their form and their skill) of showing, and prepares riders for college level competition, as well as provides camaraderie, team building, and more well-rounded horse and show experience. What makes IEA a unique show experience is that riders compete on horses via a random draw, often on a horse they have never ridden before, and compete to accrue points as an individual as well as for the team as a whole, often qualifying for post season competition such as Regionals, Zones, or even Nationals that typically span into the spring.
There are membership fees and show fees associated with the IEA organization and riders are expected by Wishing Tree to treat IEA as a true sport and get extra saddle time and horsemanship hours outside of regularly scheduled lessons, though IEA is considered a more economical avenue to showing when compared to other competition. IEA also offers scholarships and financial assistance, and team members often opt to fundraise to offset cost.
